In Victorian times, wealthy people often used Boxing Day to give away things they didn’t want to less fortunate people. Also, as a thank you for their hard work, the servants would get a “special package” of tasty treats on this day. Once the servants got back to their own homes, they would spend December 26 with their families and enjoy the gifts they had just gotten. Origins of today are full of history and tradition. The festival’s name shows that it is also a celebration of a maritime tradition. Ships would set sail with a sealed box full of money as a sign of good luck. If the trip went well, a priest would get the package, open it on Christmas, and give the things inside to people in need. Many people think that giving money to poor people on Boxing Day started in churches in the Middle Ages. It was believed that this was done to honor St. Stephen, the first Christian martyr whose feast day was on December 26. Newspapers many are published during this day and many are no0t depending on the publisher’s policy.
